With the Southern Alps in the background and Mount Cook looking down on you its the perfect place to sit and appreciate where you are and what your doing.
♦ Mount John Walkway. The walk is a 3hr loop track to the summit of Mount John where you will see a 360 degree view of Lake Tekapo. You’ll be able to get some great photos of Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook from here.
♦ Mount John Observatory Tour. The stars in Tekapo are truly amazing – We’ve never seen anything quite like it before. Theres a range of tours offered at the observatory including day, night and photography tours. We would recommend (if you have a clear evening) doing a night tour, as you will be introduced to objects and constellations visible to the naked eye as well as looking through several telescopes.
♦ Church of the Good Shepherd. This chapel is among the most photographed chapels in the world and we can see why. Lit up by the stars in the nights sky this chapel is a gem of the South.
♦ Accommodation. Tekapo is a little more expensive than usual, costing $35 NZD for a dorm and a double will start at $80NZD.
There isn’t a lot to do here but if your up for a chilled day and night this would be good place to stop. If its a clear night, we would recommend definitely holding out to see the stars.
